PunchMan

how to turn a tablet into aTime Clock Kiosk.

You do not need a dedicated punch-clock machine. A tablet or spare computer becomes a reliable employee time clock kiosk in about fifteen minutes, if you lock it to one page and keep it awake. The steps below cover each kind of device.

1. Open the kiosk link on the device

In PunchMan, go to Settings → Kiosk & fingerprint scanner and copy your location's kiosk link. Open it in the device's browser. If you have several locations, each one has a different link, so put the right one on each device. Add yourself as a test employee first, because opening the kiosk signs managers out of that browser.

2. Lock the device to the time clock

DeviceHow to lock it
iPadIn Safari, Share → Add to Home Screen, then open it from the home screen. Turn on Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access and triple-click the side or home button inside the kiosk to lock it there.
Android tabletIn Chrome, ⋮ → Add to Home screen. Turn on App pinning in Settings → Security and pin Chrome from the recent-apps screen. A kiosk-browser app also works for a dedicated device.
Windows PCCreate a Chrome shortcut with --kiosk followed by your kiosk link, and put it in the Startup folder. Or use Windows Assigned access with Microsoft Edge.
MacOpen the link in Chrome and use full screen (Control-Command-F).

3. Keep it awake, powered and in the right place

  • Keep it plugged in and turn off auto-lock and sleep (iPad: Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock → Never).
  • Set the browser to open the kiosk link at startup, so a power cut never leaves a blank screen.
  • Mount it where staff pass on the way in, such as the staff entrance, the back office or the front desk.
  • Dim the brightness; on an OLED screen, consider a nightly power-off schedule to avoid burn-in.

PunchMan's kiosk has no login of its own, refreshes itself once a day at about 4 AM, and shows a red banner if the internet drops, so a screen left on for months stays current.

4. Test one punch, then lock it down further

Punch in as your test employee, wait a minute (two punches within 60 seconds count as one), and punch out. The shift appears on the manager dashboard. Then, if you want punches accepted only from this device's network, enter the location's public IP address under Settings → Kiosk lock-down. Optional extras: a fingerprint scanner over USB, or the tablet's camera for a face check.

Yes. A Windows PC in Chrome kiosk mode or with Assigned access works well, and is a good choice when you want a USB fingerprint scanner.
