Which fingerprint scanners work?
PunchMan works with a scanner or biometric terminal that matches fingerprints itself and reports the matched user ID, connected through the PunchMan bridge. Ask support before you buy hardware for a specific model.
A fingerprint time clock answers the oldest time-clock problem: one employee punching in for another. With PunchMan you plug a scanner into the kiosk and the scanner does the matching. The fingerprint itself never leaves the device.
Each location has its own scanner key in Settings. You enrol each employee on the scanner once and record the scanner's ID for them in PunchMan. At the kiosk, the employee places their finger; the scanner matches it locally and sends only that employee's ID to PunchMan, which records the punch as a fingerprint punch and toggles them in or out.
If the connection drops, the bridge program that connects the scanner keeps the punches in a queue and sends them with their original times when it is back, up to 24 hours later.
PunchMan never receives a fingerprint image or template. It stores the employee's scanner ID and, for each shift, how they punched in and out (PIN, fingerprint or manager entry). That keeps the biometric data on the hardware at your location.
Fingerprints are still biometric data. Some places, including Illinois, Texas and Washington, require written consent and a retention policy before you enrol anyone. PunchMan asks you to record consent; your own legal obligations depend on where your employees work. See the biometric data section of our privacy policy.
Fingers get cut, wet or dusty. Turning on the scanner never turns off the keypad, so a PIN punch always works and nobody is ever stuck unable to clock in. Managers can see in Timesheets which punches were made by fingerprint and which by PIN.
